Step 1: Creating your child’s account (5 min)

Creating an account lets you (and your child) track progress and time spent learning. Tip: If you have multiple children, repeat Steps 1-2 for each.

To create an account for your child:

Step 2: Starting to Learn (10 min)

Next, choose a starting point for your child’s learning journey.

  1. In the Personalize Khan Academy popup, select your child’s grade and click Continue.

  1. On the next page, you’ll see courses that we recommend for your child. Choose one or more and click Continue. (You can click the See All link to view the full menu.)

Your child is ready to go! Have them click the blue Start button for any course to start with the very first lesson, or click the See All link to browse the entire course.

Tip: Most Khan Academy math courses include a Course Challenge that can help you quickly find where your child needs practice and where they’re already good to go. To get there, scroll to the bottom of the course page and click Start Course Challenge. These usually take 30-45 minutes and will give you some good clues about where to direct their learning.

(For more tips on setting your child up with a home study schedule during school closures, read our FAQ)

Step 3: Creating your parent account (5 min)

Important! This step must be completed within 7 days, or your child’s account will be deleted.

  1. Check your email. For each child, you’ll have an Approve your child’s Khan Academy account email waiting. Click the green Allow my child to use Khan Academy button. (Check your “Updates” or other mail folders if you don’t see the email right away.) Important: this step must be completed within 7 days, or Khan Academy will delete your child’s account. This is a compliance requirement.

  1. Follow the prompts to sign up, or sign in to an existing account, using the address where you received the email.

  1. You’ll be taken to your parent dashboard.

  1. Repeat these steps for any additional children.

Step 4: Tracking your child’s progress

  1. On your parent dashboard, click your child’s username.
  2. This takes you to the Progress report, where you can keep track of what they’re learning, and how much time they’re spending. Your child can also see this report through their account by clicking Progress in their left navigation menu.

Tip: With Khan Academy, you can be a learner too! Follow along with your child’s learning, refreshing your math skills and building new ones. To join your child on their learning journey:

  1. Click your name in the upper right corner of the page
  2. Select Learner Home. This is where you get to start your own learning journey! Search for individual video tutorials, or dive in to a full course… the choice is yours. (Many of us who are parents at Khan Academy do this… fourth grade was just so long ago.)

Learning on phone or tablet (Optional)

The Khan Academy mobile app  is available on both iOS and Android. Your child can download the app to access our full library of math practice and instruction, along with many other courses, on their mobile device. Have them sign in on the app with the same credentials they used on the web so all their practice is tracked under the same account. (Parent tools are not available in the mobile app.)
